I Would Like To Complain About My Staycation

Dear Wendy,

When I first heard about taking a “staycation” on The Today Show, I was very excited about the idea. Since I couldn’t afford to go to Europe, the Grand Canyon, or the grocery store this summer, booking a week in my own home for some relaxation sounded like just the ticket. And so it was with a great sense of anticipation that I asked for time off at work and phoned myself to book a week with me in my home. However, though I am not the type of person to normally complain, I found that the accommodations and service on my staycation were so abominable that I simply had to write this letter to me to let me know how much I failed to satisfy me during my stay.

First of all, when I arrived at my residence for my staycation, the place was a total mess. Clearly, I had failed to even make an attempt to clean up before I arrived to stay at my house. There were dishes in the sink, the bed had not been made, and one of the so-called “guest-rooms” was filled with boxes that had never been unpacked since I moved in almost four years ago. Also, why were there Christmas decorations still hanging up? It was almost as if the management had been suffering from years of a low-grade ennui that has caused her to neglect her environment in favor of talking to her cat, drinking whiskey, and shouting at the TV.

When mealtime arrived each day, I found that the management had not even bothered to go grocery shopping, but would instead try to talk me into eating weird food from unidentifiable sources. I can’t be positive, but I think that one morning I had part of a mitten dipped in tomato sauce. It’s a little hazy because the management kept me up until four o’clock the night before, insisting that I drink a bottle and a half of wine, call my ex-boyfriends and ask them, “what the fuck?”

The lack of preparation in terms of cuisine and accommodations might have been more easily overlooked if the management had delivered on some of the “fun leisure activities” I promised me. Instead of spending the days engaged in a variety of workout classes, craft activities, and productive but fun organizational tasks as promised, I found that the only activity actually scheduled was “lolling about in pajamas, mentally cataloguing regrets.”

In short, this staycation met none of my expectations, and if it weren’t for the downturn in the economy coupled with the perky insistence of overpaid newscasters that a staycation is a super awesome fun way for regular people to console themselves about the fact that they can no longer afford to even leave their house for a week, I bet I’d feel pretty ripped off.

Sincerely,
Wendy

Weirdest comment ever. But do you mind if I link your blog to my page? I don't think I've ever actually laughed out loud so much from one of these.

Also seriously pondering buying your book. Hysterical.

The best post I've read! Sounds like the Staycation I'm having at the moment. I love the line “lolling about in pajamas, mentally cataloguing regrets.”

Wow, I guess your blog JUST showed up on that little recommended list. Comments abound!

Congratulations on being a Blog of Note - very well deserved for an OMIGOD-I-AM-ACTUALLY-STRUGGLING-TO-BREATHE-FROM-THE-CRAZED-LAUGHTER blog.

Proud to say I discovered it 3 days before you reached stardom/world domination on NYC Donut Report (on Friday) and needless to say, did no work for the rest of the day, and was only noticeable to others from the gales of (inappropriate at a conservative law firm) laughter emanating from my office.

I work in a call center and am allowed to read blogs between calls.

Unfortunately this was a poor choice to finish reading just seconds before my phone rang.

I had to hit the mute button between every darn thing I said so I would wipe my eyes and try to breathe normally.

But then I would think about that mitten again...

I applaude you for your satire of yet another smarmy media concept.
This one has GOT to go to McSweeney's!

I think you should fire yourself for the bad staycation. Then start walking the streets using a shopping cart like a bum because, pretty soon, we will all be there.
That's not really funny either...

Are you sure you didn't have your "staycation" in my apartment? Too funny.

I blame the consumer. Did you not read reviews online first? fakeinterviewswithrealcelebrities.blogspot.com has several reviews of this staycation destination, and they're all negative. You just didn't do your homework.

My sis found your blog on Blog of note and told me about. Both my husband and I enjoyed the Staycation blog. You couldn't have worded the entire blog any better. Honestly, one of the best blog entries I have ever read. I will be sure not to plan my next staycation at your place :)

Your Staycation post is hilarious! I identified with your experience because I just came back from somewhat of a Staycation as well. Not nearly as exciting as yours, but the accomodations were just as deplorable! LOL!

I hope you don't mind the link to my page.

Thanks for the laugh!!

Loved the concept of the staycation! Would you mind if I booked one in a sister location? I hope I get better service but I suspect that the surroundings and cuisine will be of the same standard. Will purchase new PJ's and prepare for disappointment from management!
Thanks for a great laugh! Will have to checkout your book

Hey Wendy, looks like I might have found my new favourite blog :) Next time my beloved says she needs a holiday, I'll book a staycation - but thanks to your post, know what to look out for in advance ;-)

OMG!
I think you just perfectly described my house!

I had the same thought when I saw that whole Staycation thing. Yeah, stay home with three kids and a husband and have a blast! And I might as well jab hot pokers in my eyeballs too! What a hoot that will be.

Thanks for the belly laughs. I loved it.

So THAT's what they're called...staycations. New term officially acquired.
I only get staycations and the service really does suck.
Poor me. WAAAAAAHHHHH.

Ha! I'm going on a staycation next week. One of the highlights will be painting the fence. Can my heart take all that excitement?

I am really enjoying your witty writing on this blog...

Absolutely hysterical. Ingenious too. I'm now hooked, and I'm going to have to follow more of your posts.

Have you gotten a response from yourself? A letter such as this certainly demands one.

Also, I think we have the same guest room. :(

I read this post earlier in the week and loved it. My staycation starts tomorrow. Although, the management were I am staying are expecting me to paint the entire downstairs. And there is no childcare, so I'll have a three year old to contend with too. We really need to call the better business bureau on these sham resorts.

Love this! Who ever heard of a "staycation" anyway?! You know, when I was growing up (oh, and now), we just called these "poverty". Thanks for the laugh!

Ha, staycations. I saw the same segament on The CBS Early Morning Show. I guess even competing morning news shows don't have enough to talk about, so they steal ideas from each other...

Once again I am reeled in.. Hook, line and the damn sinker! You are a hoot. I enjoy your blogs very much. Thakns for posting them. Wait a minute am I admitting that I have no life here?

I'm on a long weekend staycation so there's plenty of time to catch up on my favorite blogs, and yours was just added to the list.
So funny I can hardly breathe, now what did housekeeping do with my inhaler.

I didn't take a week off for my staycation, only a day, well in fact 1/2 day, since I had to pick up the kid so my husband wouldn't feel guilty about leaving her at the sitters all day if I was on holiday (I love using that term whenver possible).
Why can't the management get it together? I can't imagine how these businesses stay in business if this is their idea of good customer service. My time sucked!!!! I feel like I might as well have gone to work instead of taking a bit of a staycation!
